China and the US. On 17 September Mike Pompeo became the first serving US secretary of state to visit Suriname since it gained independence in 1975. Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin said the visit was a crucial show of support for recently elected president Chandrikapersad Santokhi just two months after his government came in. While most of the focus was on Pompeo’s efforts to drum up support for the tough US stance on Venezuela, which was not shared by Santokhi’s predecessor Desi Bouterse (2010-2020), the role of China in Suriname also came up for discussion.
