Uruguayans head to the polls

Uruguayans will cast their ballots on 27 September in departmental and municipal elections postponed from May due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou only took office in March and was promptly faced with one of the most challenging public health emergencies ever to confront the country. Since then his government has earned plaudits for its handling of the pandemic, avoiding an economically punitive full lockdown but keeping fatalities low, a marked contrast to much of the rest of the region. Despite this it does not look like his five-party coalition is going to be rewarded with an electoral victory in the crunch contest for control of the capital Montevideo, which has been in the hands of the left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition since 1990.
