President Andrés Manuel López Obrador came under fire on 17 September from hundreds of intellectuals who signed an open letter in defence of freedom of expression, and urged him to desist from politically polarising and inflammatory rhetoric. López Obrador brushed aside the criticism. He accused the letter’s signatories of having “always supported neoliberal policies”, which meant that the ‘fourth transformation’ being undertaken by his government had left them feeling “offended”.
