*Brazil’s national trade association, Confederação Nacional do Comércio de Bens, Serviços e Turismo (CNC), has released its latest figures for its ‘household consumption intention’ (ICF) index, which showed a positive monthly variation in September for the first time in five months. The ICF index rose 1.3% in September to 67.6 points, although it remains 29.6% below the ICF index in September 2019 and at its lowest point ever for September. The ICF index, which has been under the 100-point mark – deemed the ‘level of satisfaction’ – since April 2015, had plunged in March and April this year as the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and its economic impacts hit. The CNC notes that these beginnings of an improvement to the ICF index show that households are “satisfied with the new rules for the reopening of businesses”. The latest data also display an improvement in perceptions of the labour market, although perceptions regarding current employment and income remain negative.
