* Peruvian extractive industry lobby, Sociedad Nacional de Minería, Petróleo y Energía (SNMPE), has reported that state-owned oil company Petroperú was last week forced to suspend use of the Oleoducto Norperuano oil pipeline and evacuate workers from two stations in the Amazonian region of Loreto, following protest action by indigenous communities in the region. Activists had previously occupied a Petroperú station in August to protest the government’s failure to provide medical and economic support for indigenous communities in the face of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but were removed by the security forces, who killed three protesters and injured 17 more in the process. SNMPE executive director, Pablo de la Flor, claimed that these disruptions will “generate great losses for Petroperú, for the Peruvian hydrocarbon industry, and for the state”, noting that oil production in the country has fallen to 21,000 barrels per day, compared to an average of 62,000 barrels per day in 2019.
