* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest industrial sector figures, which show that industrial production increased by 3.2% in August compared with July. This is the fourth consecutive month of positive growth, after industrial production plunged 27% in March-April as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and measures taken to contain it. However, the August result remains insufficient to make up for this loss, with industrial production accumulating a negative result of -8.6% in 2020 so far. Year-on-year results were negative, with industrial production contracting 2.7% compared with August 2019. Ibge official,
André Macedo, described the advance in industrial production as
“consistent and disseminated across the [different industrial] categories”, although he added that
“there is still a bit to be regained”.
