In brief: Cuba and Russia discuss transport ties

*Cuba’s deputy prime minister, Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, and Russia’s state deputy transport secretary, Dmitriy Zverev, have discussed the development of Cuba’s railway, automobile, and maritime sectors in what was the final day of a working visit that Cabrisas paid to Russia. During his visit, Cabrisas also met with representatives from Russian firms Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ), Russia’s top producer of commercial vehicles; the Sinara Group, a major engineering holding; as well as state-owned railway company, Russian Railways (RZD), and Russia’s federal air transport agency (Rosaviatsiya). The talks come a year after RZD and Cuba’s national railway, Unión de Ferrocarriles de Cuba, signed an agreement to undertake a ten-year programme of railway modernisation in Cuba running to 2029 with an overall cost of €1.88bn (US$2.2bn), to be financed through intergovernmental agreements. Under the agreement Russian technology and equipment is to be used for the modernisation of around 1,000 km of the rail network in Cuba.
