* Members of Brazil’s Sindicato Nacional dos Aeronautas (SNA) airline crew union have agreed for the SNA to enter into negotiations with their employer, Latam Airlines Brasil, to agree on permanent salary reductions, as the airline struggles in the face of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. In a virtual voting session held on 1 and 2 October, a majority of captains, co-pilots, and cabin crew voted in favour of the SNA entering into negotiations with Latam Brasil for
“permanent changes to the remuneration model”. Latam Brasil will be the first company ever to enter into such negotiations with unions in Brazil (other airlines have reached agreements on temporary salary cuts), despite negotiated salary reductions being permitted in the constitution. The airline announced it was laying off some 2,700 aircrew staff in July, but had warned of further lay-offs last month, citing some 1,200 excess crew members, if permanent salary cuts could not be agreed upon.
