José Luis Toco has outlined plans for the industrialisation of lithium reserves in Oruro department’s Salar de Coipasa, Bolivia’s second largest salt flat. Toco described the proposal for the construction of an industrial complex capable of producing 25 tonnes of lithium carbonate (used in batteries) each year, but noted that this project will be in the hands of Bolivia’s next government, following the 18 October general election. Bolivia’s substantial lithium reserves are one of its most valuable natural resources, and its exploitation is a major point of political contention, with particular disagreement over whether it should be managed by the Bolivian state, or by foreign companies.
