In brief: Airlines warn of dire consequences of air travel closure in Paraguay

* International airlines that operate in Paraguay have exhorted the government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez to set an exact date for the reopening of airports, and warned of the negative consequences that the air travel sector’s continued closure, a result of the restrictions imposed to combat the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, will have not just on the industry, but on the country as a whole. In a statement, the Junta de Representantes de Líneas Aéreas Internacionales en Paraguay (Jurcaip), noted that Paraguay historically has the lowest levels of air connectivity in Latin America, and that failure to promptly reopen the sector and allow commercial flights could “geographically isolate [Paraguay] even more”, setting the provision of air travel services back 15 years. Stressing that the air travel sector has taken all the necessary biosecurity measures against the coronavirus, and noting that the government has announced the reopening of its land border with Brazil, the Jurcaip complains that its sector is the victim of “discriminatory treatment”. The government announced this week that commercial flights would be allowed from the end of October, but it did not give an exact date, as the Jurcaip is requesting. Limited flight connections with Uruguay were given the green light in September.
