The Chilean government is once again facing intense domestic and international scrutiny over the actions taken by the security forces while policing social protests. An incident in which the Carabineros militarised police acted with disregard for the life of a minor has led the national human rights institute (INDH) to denounce the pervasive lack of respect for human life exhibited by the authorities, while the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has called for the incident to be cleared up. Disturbingly for President Sebastián Piñera and his government, the incident has provided more fuel for the protests that are contributing to making the situation in Chile increasingly volatile.
