In brief: Brazil’s retail sales reach new high in August

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for retail trade, which show that the volume of retail sales reached a new record in August, 2.6% above the previous high recorded in October 2014. Retail sales in August grew 3.4% on July, the fourth consecutive positive monthly result after sharp monthly drops in March and April, a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. In year-on-year on terms, retail sales grew 6.1% in August. The volume for retail sales over the first nine months of 2020 remains below that of the same period in 2019, but by just 0.9%. Five of the eight categories considered saw their sales increase in August compared with July: clothing and textiles (up 30.5%); other articles of personal and domestic use (10.4%); furniture and household appliances (4.6%); office supplies, technology and communications (1.5%); and fuels (1.3%). The categories to register a drop in sales were: pharmaceuticals and cosmetics (-1.2%); supermarkets, food and drink (-2.2%); and books, newspapers and stationery (-24.7%)
