In brief: Chile’s inflation higher than expected in September

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the latest figures for the consumer price index (IPC), which registered a monthly 0.6% variation in September – markedly above economists’ projections for the month, which stood around 0.2%-0.3%. This brings annual inflation to 3.1% in September. An increase in prices of food and drink (non-alcoholic) and of the home maintenance segment drove inflation in September. As well as seasonal factors, the impact of the injection of liquidity into the economy following many Chileans’ early withdrawal of part of their pension fund – authorised by law in late July as part of efforts to help the population weather the effects of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic – is understood to be behind the September inflation results.
