*The Paraguayan government has announced plans to reopen the ‘Silvio Pettirossi’ international airport that services the capital, Asunción. Paraguay’s airports have been largely inactive since March after the government led by President Mario Abdo Benítez ordered the complete closure of the country’s borders to slow the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). However, the government has announced that after coming up with new biosecurity protocols, which include requiring visitors to self-isolate for seven to 14 days upon arrival, the country’s main airport will again be opened for regular commercial flights from 21 October. The announcement comes after international airlines that operate in Paraguay urged the government to provide an exact date for the reopening of airports, warning that failure to do so could result in these abandoning the country. The Abdo Benítez government also announced that the Puente de la Amistad international bridge, the main border crossing between Paraguay and Brazil, will be reopened on 15 October.
