In brief: Argentina’s inflation confirms rising trend in September

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest figures for the consumer price index (IPC), which show that monthly inflation stood at 2.8% in September, bringing annual inflation to 36.6%. This was driven by increased prices of clothing, alcohol & tobacco, and food & drink. Monthly inflation for September was the second highest figure recorded this year, and confirms a trend of rising inflation following the deceleration of the IPC in April and May, resulting from the blow to consumption caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and measures taken to contain it. The government expects inflation to close the year at 32%, but private sector forecasts are less optimistic, seeing inflation continuing to accelerate in the last months of the year, and ending 2020 closer to 40% – still below the 53.8% annual inflation recorded in 2019.
