ARGENTINA: Government authority challenged

Argentina’s Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronist) government led by President Alberto Fernández faced an eighth nationwide demonstration this week. Civil society groups once again defied the quarantine restrictions imposed in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to protest against the government’s handling of the pandemic, its management of the national economy, and its perceived attempts to co-opt the judiciary [WR-20-32]. The protest campaign is not only putting pressure on the government to change course, it is also eroding its authority. The risk is that civil and political disobedience could spread and jeopardise governability unless the Fernández administration can restore its authority.
