MEXICO: Church spat fails to distract from Covid-19

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took aim at Mexico’s Catholic Church this week, citing a passage from the latest encyclical published by Pope Francis earlier this month to rebuke the country’s ecclesiastical hierarchy for failing to condemn neoliberalism. Mexico’s Archdiocese indirectly responded in an editorial contending that never had Mexico needed “leaders who promote unity” rather than “confrontation” and “polarisation” more than now. Its chastisement coincided with an appearance by the deputy health minister before a senate commission during which he sought to exculpate the government for any mishandling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic by pointing the finger at past ‘neo-liberal’ governments for a deterioration in public health.
