President Carlos Alvarado and the president of the legislative assembly, Eduardo Cruickshank, of the opposition Partido Restauración Nacional (PRN), have announced the 17 October launch of a multisectoral dialogue to discuss Costa Rica’s financial and economic future. The announcement comes as the government has been forced to ditch a proposal to begin talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over a finance arrangement following widespread roadblocks organised by the protest group Movimiento Rescate Nacional (MRN) [WR-20-40]. The proposal had included plans for new taxes. Despite abandoning the proposal, and even a call by one of MRN’s leaders, José Miguel Corrales, for an end to the protests amid concerns that they had been taken over by criminal groups, the unrest has continued.End of preview - This article contains approximately 906 words.
