COSTA RICA: Alvarado seeks to recover initiative

President Carlos Alvarado and the president of the legislative assembly, Eduardo Cruickshank, of the opposition Partido Restauración Nacional (PRN), have announced the 17 October launch of a multisectoral dialogue to discuss Costa Rica’s financial and economic future. The announcement comes as the government has been forced to ditch a proposal to begin talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over a finance arrangement following widespread roadblocks organised by the protest group Movimiento Rescate Nacional (MRN) [WR-20-40]. The proposal had included plans for new taxes.
