REGION: Amazon fires put EU–Mercosur trade agreement at risk

It took almost 20 years to negotiate but the European Union (EU) trade deal with the South Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) could now collapse at the final hurdle – ratification by the respective legislatures. At the root of the problem is Europe’s demand for stronger environmental safeguards, and its call for more to be done to stop deforestation.
