In brief: New figures show impact of pandemic on formal jobs in Nicaragua

* Nicaragua’s central bank (BCN) has released new figures which show that there were 695,867 people employed in the formal sector in August, 3.7% less compared to August 2019 - indicative of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. As regards different sectors, the number of formal jobs registered in electricity, gas & water was up 6.7% in August year-on-year, followed by mining & quarries (4.4%); construction (3.7%); and transport, storage & communications (2.9%). Sectors which registered a decline included trade (-8.2%); manufacturing (-5.3%); and finance (-3.2%). The most recent report by local-think tank Fundación Nicaragüense para el Desarrollo Económico y Social (Funides) forecast that open unemployment in Nicaragua will rise from 5.5% in 2019 to 6.8% in 2020.
