In brief: Private sector think-tank warns on Mexico’s economic recovery

* A new analysis by Mexico’s Centro de Estudios Económicos del Sector Privado (CEESP), a private sector think-tank, has warned that it could take more than a decade to return to the levels of income per capita registered in 2018. CEESP also expressed concern more generally regarding a lack of legal certainty under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, warning that this could impact on investment, economic growth, and job creation. It singled out in particular the proposed dissolution of 109 public trust funds (‘fideicomisos’), which was approved by the federal chamber of deputies, and awaits approval in the senate, which CEESP warned seemed based on “political motives” in order for the government to have “more discretion in the use of resources”.
