Lisardo Bolaños, has told reporters that the number of workers registered with the social security institute (IGSS) in August was 1.26m, down from 1.35m in January - indicative of the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on formal employment in the country. However, there are signs of recovery: the August figure was up from 1.24m in July and 1.23m in June - the months worst hit by the pandemic. As of 1 October, a full-fledged reopening of the economy (which the government shut down in March to stop the spread of the virus) is in place, whereby commercial and other activities are permitted to operate, with physical distancing provisions in place.
