*The governor of Brazil’s Pernambuco state,
Paulo Câmara, has announced that a new data centre and cable landing station (CLS) for the ‘SeaBras-1’ submarine fibre optic cable that connects the US to Brazil will be built in Pernambuco’s state capital, Recife. Câmara said the R$110bn (US$19.6bn) project will be developed by a local investment group, Recife Co, in conjunction with US technology firm Seaborn Networks, which owns and operates SeaBras-1. The governor added that the project, slated to enter the construction stage in May 2021, will help make Pernambuco and neighbouring states in Brazil’s northeastern region (Nordeste) more competitive as it will provide the area with a faster internet connection. “
We are endowing [Pernambuco] state with the best conditions to develop a global knowledge and creative economy… to create lots of employment and income in the information technology sector”, Câmara said, noting that the initiative also aims to attract foreign firms that require high speed internet connections to the Nordeste.
