In brief: Employment continues to recover in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published new figures which show that the national unemployment rate fell to 5.1% in September, down from 5.2% in August, as 621,000 people returned to work. According to the Inegi figures, of the 12m people that left the economically active population (PEA) in April following the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, 8.4m were reincorporated by September. Likewise, the number of people employed but absent fell to 1.5m in September, from 2.6m in August, after having peaked at 9.5m in April. Inegi also reported that employment in the informal sector rose to 28.1m, 245,000 more than in August.
