Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador claimed to have delivered another of his campaign promises after on 15 September his government held the ‘raffle of the presidential plane’. López Obrador says that the presidential plane bought by the previous Felipe Calderón administration (2006-2012), epitomises the ostentatiousness and corruption of his predecessors; and vowed to sell it and use the proceeds to fund government programmes. Having failed to find a buyer for the customised Boeing 787 Dreamliner, López Obrador said the government would hold a special raffle to raise funds equivalent to the value of the plane and use this to fund programmes as planned until the plane can be sold.
