Luis Aguirre Lang, president of the Consejo Nacional de la Industria Maquiladora y Manufacturera de Exportación (Index), an organisation which represents Mexico's maquila export factories, has said that there is US$3.7bn in new investments lined up for the sector in the coming months, which would generate 100,000 new jobs. Speaking at a virtual press conference, Aguirre hailed the recovery of the maquila export sector, which had been adversely affected by the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, expressing confidence that over the next few months exports could recover to 2019 levels, when annual exports totalled US$271bn. However, Aguirre did note with concern various outbreaks of Covid-19 in Europe and in some parts of the US, which could affect these projections.
