In brief: Peru seeks to fully reopen economy

*Peru’s prime minister Walter Martos has announced that the government plans to reopen the economy in its entirety by the end of the year. Martos claimed that as long as certain sanitary protocols are in place, “entertainment activities” (including tourism) still prohibited in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic will be allowed to resume before 2020 comes to a close. “There will probably be a second wave [of Covid-19]”, Martos acknowledged, but he insisted that “it will not be as drastic as in Europe”, claiming that early studies suggest that “35% of the population already has immunity” in Peru, among the worst-affected countries in the world by the first wave of the pandemic. The science behind immunity still remains uncertain, although both cases and deaths of Covid-19 are currently on a downward trajectory in Peru.
