In brief: Brazil grants first GI to indigenous group

* Brazil’s government has granted a Geographical Indication (GI) to guaraná, a fruit native to the Amazon and grown by the Sateré-Mawé indigenous group - the first of Brazil’s 72 GIs to be granted for a product produced by an indigenous group. GIs refer to products with specific characteristics, qualities, or reputations resulting from their geographical origin, are recognised as intellectual property rights (IPRs), and therefore offer both a helpful marketing tool and protection of the name. A 2018 study by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation found that a GI can add 20%-50% value to the final price of a product. Both guaraná and guaraná stick, produced in Andirá-Marau, a reserve located between the states of Amazonas and Pará in northern Brazil, will now be marketed worldwide with a label identifying its origin. Guaraná is commonly sold as powder, syrup, or energy drinks, with its most popular product being guaraná fizzy drinks sold in Brazil and distributed worldwide. Agriculture Minister Débora Gomide said “this is an achievement for the whole country. [Guaraná] is a 100% Brazilian product, reflecting the wealth of our people, our tradition, and our biodiversity”.
