In brief: IMF official suggests Argentina could request more funds

* In an interview with Argentine radio station La Red, the executive director for the Southern Cone at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Sergio Chodos, has said that Argentina could request more money from the IMF as part of the talks to renegotiate its Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) with the multilateral organisation, to which it has US$44bn in outstanding debt. Chodos said “It is true that there could exist the need for a little more [money]…But I cannot imagine something that is very exorbitant compared to before. The intention is to leave, not return”. He also said that it was “absolutely necessary” that Argentina reach an agreement with the IMF before next July, ideally in April or March. The IMF is due to return to Argentina next month for talks on a new IMF-supported programme.
