VENEZUELA: López makes his escape

Before turning himself in to the Venezuelan authorities in February 2014, opposition leader Leopoldo López told a crowd of supporters that “I will never leave Venezuela”. López has spent the last six-and-a-half years in prison, under house arrest, or in hiding in the Spanish embassy in Caracas; on 24 October, he finally decided to flee Venezuela, leaving the embassy and travelling hundreds of miles across the country and into Colombia, from where he flew to join his family in Spain.
