PANAMA: Pandemic spending takes its toll

Panama’s economy & finance minister Héctor Alexander last week unveiled a legislative bill to modify legally established targets for the fiscal deficit included in the 2008 social and fiscal responsibility law (LRSF). The move by the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) government led by President Laurentino Cortizo is the latest sign of the difficulties it faces in balancing the books as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic - problems which are not going unnoticed elsewhere.
