In brief: Brazil sees record formal job creation in September

* Brazil’s economy ministry has presented the latest figures for formal job creation, according to which the labour market added 313,564 formal jobs in September – the third consecutive month of positive job creation, and the highest number of formal jobs created in September since the current series began in 2010. Economy Minister Paulo Guedes welcomed these figures, noting that they confirm the Brazilian economy’s “V-shaped recovery in 2020”, and are a sign of the federal government’s efforts to preserve jobs and income throughout the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. However, overall the Brazilian economy has lost an accumulated 558,597 formal jobs in the first nine months of 2020, due to important losses in the formal job market from March to June.
