In brief: Mexico to export sorghum to China

* Mexico’s agriculture ministry (Sader) has formalised a sanitary protocol with China’s customs authorities for the export of sorghum from Mexico to China. According to Sader, in the first year Mexico is expected to export to China between 50,000 and 100,000 tonnes of sorghum, sourced from 1,500 producers, primarily from the state of Tamaulipas. Mexico’s agriculture minister, Víctor Manuel Villalobos, celebrated the signing of the agreement as a consequence of efforts to diversify Mexico’s agri-food exports, and as a sign of the good relationship between the two countries. Villalobos noted that trade in agricultural and food products between China and Mexico has grown in recent years, with Mexico’s exports to China increasing from US$174m in 2015 to US$667m in 2019. Villalobos added that the Mexican government hopes to now close agreements for the export of avocados from Jalisco state; lemons; and pork organs, as well as other products that China is interested in, “as part of a strategy of opening new markets which respond to the growing demand for foodstuffs in the Asian region”.
