* Panama’s state-owned rail operator, Metro de Panama, has signed a contract with Consorcio HPH Joint Venture, a consortium led by two South Korean companies, Hyundai Engineering and Construction and Posco, to construct line 3 of the Panama City metro system, which is expected to take 54 months to complete. Panama also signed a subcontract with Japanese firms Mitsubishi and Hitachi to develop the integrated operations system for the metro. According to the director general of Metro de Panama,
Héctor Ortega, construction of the new line will generate over 5,000 jobs and benefit over 500,000 inhabitants. The train will make 14 stops in 45 minutes and connect the northern part of Panamá province to the Panamá Oeste province in order to reduce traffic congestion. It is estimated that an average of 20,000 people will use line 3 during peak periods.
