* Colombia’s national statistics institute (Dane) has reported that the country’s unemployment rate totalled 15.8% in September, down from 16.8% in August, but up from 10.2% in September 2019. Unemployment soared with the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in March, but this is the lowest rate recorded since then, indicative of the gradual recovery of jobs in Colombia. Dane noted that the impact of the pandemic on employment has disproportionately affected urban areas – where the unemployment rate totalled 18.3% in September, up from 10.1% in the same month last year – and women, registering 20.7% unemployment in September, compared with just 12.3% for men.
