Ulises Solís, the general manager of Macusani Yellocake, a Peruvian subsidiary of Canadian company Plateau Energy Metals, has announced that operations on Peru’s first lithium project are now set to begin in 2023, a year later than previously planned, as a result of delays caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The Falchani deposit in Puno region is thought to hold 2.5m tonnes of high-grade lithium, and is expected to yield 25,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate in its first year of operation, rising to 80,000 tonnes per year by its sixth year. Solís also noted that Plateau Energy Metals had successfully raised US$597m from investors – unnamed European mutual funds – but emphasised that it would maintain control over the project.
