Argentina’s deep economic crisis is starting to take its toll on the unity of the Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists) government led by President Alberto Fernández. In an unexpected move Vice President Cristina Fernández published an open letter last week in which she said that the government is failing to resolve the crisis. The letter has fuelled speculation that the influential vice president is unhappy with the government’s economic policy and wants not just to distance herself from it but to force its revision. The suspected lack of consensus inside the government could undermine efforts to restore the requisite market and public confidence in Argentina to help find a way out of the crisis.
