Guatemala’s interior minister, Oliverio García Rodas, tendered his resignation on 3 November. García Rodas’s position had been rendered untenable by the decision by President Alejandro Giammattei to veto the interior ministry’s authorisation of Planned Parenthood, a US-based reproductive healthcare and family planning NGO, establishing operations in the country. Giammattei gave an impassioned defence of his pro-life stance, and opposition to abortion, to justify why he had rescinded his interior minister’s decision.
