* Costa Rica’s national statistics institute (Inec) has released the latest figures on unemployment, which show that the country’s unemployment rate totalled 22% in the third quarter of 2020. This is a 10.6 percentage-point increase on the unemployment rate recorded during the same quarter last year, but represents an improvement on the 23.2% unemployment rate registered during the June-August 2020 rolling quarter. Unemployment is significantly higher among women (29%) than men (17.4%). Inec further noted that the employed population has fallen by 317,000 people compared with the third quarter of 2019, down to 1.85m, while the workforce has diminished by 74,000 people compared with last year, down to 2.37m – a consequence of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, and the measures taken to contain it.
