In brief: BCIE approves Eta funds for Nicaragua and Honduras

* The Central American bank for economic integration (BCIE) has authorised US$1m in non-reimbursable funds for Honduras and Nicaragua to implement humanitarian actions in response to the impact of tropical storm Eta, which made landfall last week on the Central American isthmus. The funds can be spent on the purchase of food, potable water, and basic goods for those affected, as well as on medicines and medical support. The BCIE, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the World Bank have also announced that they will provide coordinated support to Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, the countries worst hit by the impact of the storm, through an action plan which will include short, medium, and long-term financing for humanitarian aid and reconstruction. The announcement followed a virtual meeting of representatives from the three banks, although further details were not provided. According to the most recent (10 November) update by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 2.5m people have been affected in Central America, of which 1.8m are in Honduras, 311,300 in Guatemala, and 130,000 in Nicaragua.
