*Colombia’s comptroller general’s office has called on state-owned oil company, Ecopetrol, to carry out modernisation works at its Barrancabermeja refinery (the largest in the country), in Santander department, which a recent report accused of breaching environmental regulations for producing 27 oil spills into the Magdalena River in the space of a year. Auditor Óscar David Rivero, who oversaw this report, claimed that Ecopetrol had failed to update its environmental contingency plan in 2019 as required by the environmental licensing authority (Anla), and that “deficiencies in both pipes and drains” as a result of insufficient modernisation had led to recent spills. In response, Ecopetrol issued a statement claiming that the situation had been clarified with Anla earlier this year, with a US$500m investment plan for “projects that seek to guarantee the reduction of environmental impacts” in the process of being finalised.
