In brief: Mexico’s lower chamber approves expenditures for 2021 budget

*Mexico’s federal chamber of deputies has approved in general terms the expenditure aspect of the 2021 national budget (PEF), with 297 votes in favour and 134 against. The approved budget plans for M$6.3trn (US$307bn) in spending, a 0.3% decrease on the budget approved in 2020. The net so-called ‘programmable expenditure’ (which concerns healthcare, public security, and investment) totals M$4.6trn, a 1.3% increase in real terms on the 2020 budget, while ‘non-programmable expenses’ total M$1.7trn. Erasmo González Robledo, a federal deputy from the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party and head of the chamber’s budget and public accounts committee, describes the 2021 PEF as “a responsible budget, conscious of the necessities”. The chamber must still vote on the particulars of the PEF.
