MEXICO: Has López Obrador committed a diplomatic blunder?

Maintaining good relations with the US is imperative for Mexico. This maxim has been accepted by all Mexican leaders including President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Since assuming office, López Obrador has gone out of his way to appease US President Donald Trump and avoid confrontation. For this reason, López Obrador’s controversial decision not to recognise Democratic candidate Joe Biden as the winner of the US presidential election on 3 November has flummoxed observers on both sides of the border. López Obrador says that his stance is prudent given that the result has not been formalised and Trump has filed legal challenges. But with confirmation of Biden’s victory looking like a mere formality, there are fears that López Obrador has committed a diplomatic mistake that could harm bilateral relations going forward.
