REGION: Tropical storm Eta compounds Covid woes

“The country is facing the worst crisis in its history.” Honduras’s President Juan Orlando Hernández did not mince his words in response to the damage wreaked by tropical storm Eta which made landfall last week on the Central American isthmus. With Guatemala and Nicaragua also badly hit, the flooding and impact of the storm has invoked comparison with the devastation caused by Hurricane Mitch which killed some 10,000 Central Americans in 1998. It comes as the sub-region is already reeling from the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, dealing a further hammer blow to recovery efforts.
