ICC opens door to Venezuela human rights probe

In 2018, the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague admitted a request from Venezuela’s domestic opposition to open a preliminary investigation into human rights abuses in the country, in particular centred on the suppression of protests in 2017 against the election of a national constituent assembly (ANC). On 5 November, ICC chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda gave the clearest sign yet that this preliminary assessment may finally be complete, and that the court’s decision on whether to launch a formal investigation will soon be made public.
