In brief: Formal job recovery gathers pace in Mexico

*Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) has reported that 200,641 formal jobs were created in the country in October. This is the highest monthly formal job creation figure recorded since the IMSS announced that over 1.1m formal jobs were lost between March and June as a result of the restrictions imposed to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic. An IMSS report also noted that October was the third consecutive month with positive job creation and that in total 406,881 formal jobs have been “recovered” in the last three months. However, the overall result for the year remains negative with 518,609 less formal jobs registered compared to last year. Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has not updated its unemployment figures since March due to the Covid-19 restrictions, but Finance Minister Arturo Herrera has said almost 7.5m total jobs (formal and informal) were created since August. “We are entering a phase of clear and solid [economic] recovery”, he remarked.
