In brief: Chile to begin reopening international air borders

* Chile’s deputy tourism minister, José Luis Uriarte, has hailed the gradual reopening of Chile’s air borders for international tourists, which will begin with Santiago’s 'Arturo Merino Benítez' airport on 23 November, almost 250 days after the air border was closed due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on 18 March. According to a press release by Chile’s tourism federation (Fedetur) international passengers will be required to follow strict sanitary measures in line with the health ministry’s protocols, the first of which is completing an affidavit identifying their place of origin, destination, health condition and any possible coronavirus symptoms. In addition to the affidavit, international passengers must have a negative Covid-19 test result less than 72 hours before flying into Chile, meaning a quarantine is not enforced but passengers will be monitored using the Covid-19 monitoring app. Fedetur’s president, Ricardo Margulis, has said that the move “offers the certain possibility of starting the tourism industry’s recovery, considering that receptive tourism represents 35% of total national tourism”, adding that he hopes that land borders, through which 55% of foreign tourists enter, will be opened soon.
