* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released the results of its national employment survey (Enoe) for the third quarter of 2020, which show that the employed population fell by 4.2m people year-on-year, from 55.2m in the third quarter of 2019 down to 51m people this year. This represents a 1.4 percentage point increase in the national unemployment rate, from 3.7% up to 5.1%. The Enoe was not conducted in the second quarter of 2020, due to restrictions imposed to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. However, monthly data suggests that the unemployment rate has fallen gradually since peaking at 5.5% in June. The Enoe also highlighted that job losses have disproportionately affected the urban population, with an unemployment rate of 6.4% recorded in the country’s 39 largest cities.
