* The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has allocated an additional US$17m in aid to help people affected by hurricanes Eta and Iota in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The new funding includes up to US$8.5m in Honduras, US$7m in Guatemala and US$1.5m in Nicaragua to provide emergency shelter, food, hygiene supplies, critical relief items, and protection for the most vulnerable. USAID had previously announced US$120,000 apiece for Honduras and Guatemala and US$100,000 for Nicaragua. Also yesterday, Honduras announced it would receive a US$3m donation from Taiwan. The sub-region has already received pledges of US$1m from the Central American bank for economic integration (BCIE) for Honduras and Nicaragua, and an initial €1.55m (US$1.83m) from the European Union, among other donations, while the BCIE has announced a US$2.5bn reconstruction plan to finance projects that address and prevent disasters and calamities related to climate change.
